Whether you’re partaking in Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day, or Single Awareness Day, what we all really need is some love. Treating yourself to a spa day or a nice dinner and a bottle of wine are both great ways to give yourself some self-care. Of course, sometimes the simple moments can be just as good. Take a few minutes or a few hours with these no-fuss ways to love yourself this week.
Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while.
Adulthood can get in the way of keeping up with our friendships. We don’t intend for it to happen. We really want to talk to our favorite people. Often, by the time we get our To Do list checked off, we haven’t left enough time or energy to reconnect with our friends. Make that a priority this week. Call up that friend you’ve been meaning to check in with and see how they’re doing. Extra points if you do a video call.
Take a walk.
And once your phone is off, take advantage of it. Take a stroll around the block in your neighborhood or near your co-working space. It doesn’t matter where it is. Walking is good for your health (a little weight-bearing exercise is good for every woman) and good for your mind. If you have a problem to tackle or a creative challenge to meet, walking can help you sort through your thoughts and come up with the best solution.
No need for lotus position or a singing bowl. It can just be you and a moment of quiet. Give yourself time to clear your mind before you get out of bed, while you’re washing the dishes, or on your morning commute. You could even do a meditation on that walk you’re going to take. And evening meditation is good too! The point is to give yourself time to practice a bit of mindfulness and find a way to achieve even momentary balance.
Be British and take a break for tea.
Whether it’s afternoon tea or elevenses, there’s something about a hot cup and a plate of yummy things to accompany it. Do it at home or bring in some “biscuits” and milk to the office. Pouring a cup and waiting for it to steep can also be a different kind of meditation. Plus with this meditation, you get sweets when it’s done.
Head to the gym or copy some yoga moves from a YouTube video. Moving tells your body that works so hard for you that you care about it. A work out can also relieve stress, anxiety, and depressive feelings.
Do a fashion show for yourself.
If you feel like you’re perpetually in your uniform (maybe pants and a button-down for the office worker and sweatpants for the freelancer), change it up this week. Put on your favorite dress and the pair of heels you love but can never find the right occasion to wear them. If you want to really go all the way, accessorize the hell out of it and even spend a little time on a smokey eye or a fancy updo. And then go absolutely nowhere. Do it just to look yourself and the mirror and think: damn, I’m gorgeous.
Binge watch without guilt.
You probably shouldn’t spend your entire Friday night streaming the first two seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, right? WRONG! Give into it. Often when we indulge in our favorite show or our favorite ice cream, we consume with a side of guilt. Not this week. Forget about what you haven’t done, how productive you weren’t the rest of the week and give yourself all the couch space you need. Plus maybe even that ice cream.
Make a list of your 2018 accomplishments.
Sure, we’re only a month and a half into the new year, but it’s never too early to stay encouraged. There’s almost no better way to keep moving forward than to give the past a good once over. What have you already accomplished in these six and half weeks? Big accomplishments like a new client or a big contract are great. But also don’t forget the small things. Threw away the bra you’ve had for a decade? Tried a new recipe? You’re amazing!
Eat dessert for breakfast.
Have a solo dance party.
Dance what your Mama gave you this week. Put on your favorite playlist and get grooving. And be sure to take the meme’s advice and dance like no one’s watching.
Put your phone on airplane mode for at least two hours.
Does that text really need to be returned right now? Probably not. Facebook and Instagram will also survive without you. Tech experts have raised red flags about our tech addictions. You can grey out your phone and keep your phone out of your bedroom to get better sleep but turning your phone completely off or putting it in your phone’s disconnected mode is also a good way to remember: you are not your technology. We’re all old enough to remember a pre-mobile phone era, right? We survived then. You’ll survive a few hours now.
Yup, it’s time to get in some real self-love this week. Whether it’s your favorite electronic “massager” or just your lotioned and manicured hand, as RuPaul says, “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?” And if you need to update or upgrade your electronics, here are some suggestions.
Mix up a cocktail or a mocktail.
It doesn’t matter what you drink, whether it’s an alcoholic drink or a spritzer, soda, or cocktail. The real point is to chill out and put something colorful in a nice glass. Do those three things and you’ll have successfully shown yourself some care and attention.
Get in some art.
And by art, I mean Black Panther. It opens this weekend and if you don’t already have your ticket, get it now!
