For women of a certain age, Marisa Tomei will always be best known as Lisa Bonet’s first-year roommate in “A Different World.” Or maybe you remember her as the hilarious and slightly annoying fianceé to Joe Pesci’s character in “My Cousin Vinnie”? She won an Oscar for her role in “My Cousin Vinnie,” which began the start of a successful and long career. Not one to be typecast, she’s appeared in an episode of Seinfeld where she slapped George Costanza, as a stripper in “The Wrestler,” and even as Aunt May in The Avengers movies.
Tomei is also not one to be typecast by society. Though she’s dated some of Hollywood’s stars including Robert Downey, Jr., Josh Radnor from “How I Met Your Mother,” and supposedly Lenny Kravitz, she hasn’t married. Tomei once said, “I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution … And I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings.”
At 52, Tomei is still going strong, she’s focused on building a repertoire of work with range and longevity. A woman with ambition and talent, who doesn’t love that?
