Octavia Spencer can do it all. From playing a trailblazing NASA mathematician in Hidden Figures to God in The Shack, her versatility knows no bounds. It’s why she is this month’s Spotlight Spinster, or single celebrities we love.
It’s been quite a year already for Octavia Spencer. She received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Hidden Figures plus box office success for a movie about black women many doubted would be as popular as it was. (And a movie people sometimes got confused with the another movie that starred black people.)
That wasn’t the first time she’d teamed up with talented black women to make a splash. Spencer’s breakout performance was in The Help, alongside Viola Davis.
She’s also starred in Fruitvale Station, as the mother of Oscar Grant, a black man killed in Oakland by police and Black Panther director’s Ryan Coogler’s first film. Spencer also doesn’t shy away from big budget Hollywood films either like the Divergent series.
Later this year, she’ll star in The Shape of Water, a much buzzed about Guillermo del Toro sci-fi love story. See? Versatility.
“Don’t let yourself get caught up in the trap of comparison.”
— Octavia Spencer
At 47, Spencer has also been honest about not expecting to be single and childless at her age, but embraces the unpredictability of life. She doesn’t believe in getting “caught up in the trap of comparison.”
We love that…and also Octavia Spencer playing Harriet Tubman in Drunk History.
We’d be a part of her Army of Bad Bitches any day.
