Just because summer is winding down, doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like a kid. Below are three suggestions that will have you feeling like you’re 10 years old again in no time.
Put the pedal to the medal — get on a bike!
Yesterday, for the first time I rented a Citibike and cruised to meet some friends in a nearby park. I own a bike that an ex bought for me when we started dating, but honestly, I haven’t ridden the bike since we broke up about three years ago. I think it reminds me too much of him, so it sits in my hallway with two flat tires and no lock.
That may or may not be a metaphor for our relationship.
I got a hankering to bike ride mainly to be more active and help combat some of my not-so-great eating habits. I downloaded the app, walked to the station, unlocked my bike and off I went. It was exhilarating even if most of the other bikers were whizzing by me. But I didn’t care, I felt carefree and like I was 10 years old again riding my red Schwinn 10 speed around my neighborhood in Montgomery, Alabama.
Now with all the bike share programs like Citibike in New York, you don’t have to actually own one. Which is great because then you don’t have to worry about where to park it or it being stolen. Just remember to make sure it’s properly docked, a costly mistake I nearly made.
Live in the moment!
If you’ve ever watched kids play then you know they live completely in the moment. They aren’t worrying about what they have to do when they leave the playground or birthday party. They are fully into the fun with their whole bodies, minds, and souls, which is why they totally melt down when their parents pull them away.
Let’s take a lesson from them. The next time you are out with friends doing whatever, embrace the moment by putting down the phone, turning off your multi-tasking brain, and just be there – soaking up the moment.
One word – DANCE!
If you, like me are a woman of a certain age, you most likely will not be up in the club dropping it like it’s hot. That doesn’t mean you can’t bust a move somewhere. Incorporate impromptu dance parties at your girl’s nights, kid’s birthday parties, where ever you can move your body. Take a fun Zumba class, go to a retro-themed prom, check out that fun party at the lounge near your house.
And heck, if you are feeling yourself and want to head to the club to drop it likes it’s hot, then, by all means, get your swag on! Just get out of the grown-up rut of just getting together for dinners and brunches.
Get out there a shake a tail feather or two – you can still be home at a decent time to get a good night’s sleep!
