In honor of the return of Game of Thrones, a repost from 2016, no spoiler alerts here!
I’m an avid Game of Thrones watcher. I don’t always catch it on Sunday night because love means compromise, and because on demand television means when the apartment is mine, I can catch up on all the happenings in Westeros, the Iron Islands, and of course the North. As my boyfriend said, “It’s basically Empire, a long time ago.” And yes, it’s full of family drama, power plays, sex, and violence.
But all that intrigue wouldn’t necessarily sustain my interest, I’ve fallen off of shows with only that (Sorry Scandal and Empire!). GOT has something those other two don’t for me: people I really root for, women in particular. Queen Margaery and her grandmother (I’m hoping that in the world of fictional characters, somewhere she and Downton Abbey’s Dowager Duchess are slicing and dicing everyone with their wit and wordplay), Arya, Sansa, and especially Khaleesi.
Or if you want to call her by her full name: Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons (check out all the meanings here).
At the end of an episode two weeks ago, Khaleesi is told by one of her soldiers and her part-time lover that she isn’t made to just sit on a throne. She’s a conqueror. Khaleesi is like, oh hold that thought, and then returns on the back of one of her dragons and gets the hordes of people who have decided to follow her to pledge their loyalty to her forever.
Probably very similar to how your day is going.
Neither you nor I can go out and mount up our dragon, but we can all be conquerors in our own right. In fact, as a reminder of that, I made up my own Khaleesi-like name. And I don’t mean putting it into one of those name generators (although you could or get one for that sword you carry around).
I started thinking about what her names represent. They tell her story, her past and her present and tell other people exactly what she’s about. Sounds like something I need to help me on days when I think, what am I doing with my life again?
Herewith, for the first time, my Game of Thrones name.
Camille Acker of the House Allen/Acker — My mother and father’s families are filled with amazing people who have brought great art, great work, great love, great kids into the world. I’m proud to be among them.
First of Her Name — Just barely because there’s some woman in Paris who has the same first and last name. Damn, I should have Facebook messaged her for a meet up.
Queen of the Pen and Laptop — All day, every day!
Camille of the Great East Coast — On Chicago, but always true to my east coast roots. It may always feel like my real home.
Breaker of Literary Genres — A reminder as a try to wrestle down my current creative project that I don’t have to keep my ideas in a box, it’s better to let them run free.
Mother of Plants — Until I have kids…and if I never do, I’ll always be a caretaker to those. They definitely don’t breathe fire though and would be pretty awful at defending me. Oh well.
So, how are you going to be a conqueror today? And what’s your name?
