This month’s Spotlight Spinster, our round-up of fabulous female celebrity singles, is supermodel, actress, and humanitarian Naomi Campbell, who turned 47 this week!
British bred and of Jamaican descent, Naomi was even a star in childhood getting a role in Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” video and Culture Club’s “I’ll Tumble for Ya.” Once she started modeling at 15, Naomi became one of the most famous faces in modeling, even becoming that icon of 1990s modeling, the Supermodel.
Getting to be a supermodel was not without its challenges, especially because of her race. Her supermodel status didn’t change the fact that some designers did not want a black women walking their runway. She wouldn’t get the same number of advertising campaigns or big cosmetics contracts as fellow supermodels Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer.
Naomi has long been outspoken about race and the inequalities in the world. She has worked with charities focused on children, breast cancer, and poverty.
Naomi has also famously had some anger issues, throwing a Blackberry at her housekeeper and spitting on a Heathrow airport officer. Fellow model Tyra Banks said last year that she’s still scared of Naomi. Naomi’s even copped to the bad behavior, famously wearing a “Naomi Hit Me and I Loved It” t-shirt.
We can’t cosign on the violent episodes, but there can be no doubt that the woman is fierce and also maybe incapable of aging.
You better work, Naomi. And keep working.
