In this month’s installment of About Her Business, we talk to entrepreneur and career coach Madelyn Mackie about her business, Madelyn Mackie & Associates.
TSU: Thanks for taking the time for this interview! Tell us about your business, Madelyn Mackie & Associates. What kind of services and/or products do you offer?
Madelyn Mackie & Associates is a full-service career management firm. We help professionals move past their fears and activate their career dreams. We will update and create modern, relevant resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and cover letters plus help with job search strategy, interviewing, and salary negotiations.
TSU: Why did you start your business?
I have had a lot of different careers in my life. I was a published biochemistry researcher, I worked at 4 Tony Award-winning theaters, and I was an officer with an international nonprofit. Friends and colleagues would always ask me, how did I go from the lab to the stage to the c-suite. I would explain my strategies and then they would ask how much do I charge if they were to hire me to do the same thing for their careers.
TSU: What experiences have influenced how you approach your business today?
As I was building my business, I participated in numerous entrepreneurial training programs (Operation Hope, Centro Community Partners, SCORE, the Small Business Development Center, and the National Speakers Association Speakers Academy). Learning different business strategies, meeting other new and established entrepreneurs, and talking about my business over and over again truly helped me plan out a thorough and realistic business plan. I set up my business for the long haul and many of those techniques I learned from my colleagues and adapted to my business are still in place today.
TSU: What’s the most challenging aspect of running your own business? The most rewarding?
The most challenging part of my business is finding the time to develop new business products and business development opportunities.
The most rewarding part of my business is seeing my clients excited about their career transitions and reaching their goals.
TSU: What are your goals for Madelyn Mackie & Associates in 2017?
To develop new products and continue to grow our speaking and training programs.
TSU: What advice would you give to women looking for a new job?
Ask for help! Your network is your most powering tool in your career. You need to let people know about your goals and dreams. By speaking it aloud, you will activate the laws of attraction and what you seek will start coming to you.
TSU: Any advice for women looking to start their own business?
Write a complete business plan and start with the little things. If you want to own your own store, begin selling products online. If you want to start a nonprofit, serve on a board or sign up to volunteer. If you want to own a restaurant, start catering events for friends and family. Every entrepreneur started with no clients, no revenue, and no idea what to do. You have to start somewhere, but before you “go big or go home” start with the basics and build up.
