Yeah!! It’s February and that means two of my favorites things…Fashion Week in NY and Black History Month! We’ll start with BHM for this post and tackle Fashion Week later in the month.
It’s more important than ever to recognize the contributions that African-Americans have made to this country and the world. Founded in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week on the second week of February, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. Dr. Woodson who became known as the “Father of Black History” also founded the Study of Negro Life and History (later renamed the Study of Afro-American Life and History) and pinned more than a dozen books including the Miseducation of the Negro – a must read.
There are celebrations and events taking place in cities, towns – big and small all month to acknowledge Black History Month. Here a few event listings from the cities where The Spinster Union founders reside accompanied by images from my favorite black artists. Make sure you check out Black History Month event listings in a city near you.
