The indomitable Laverne Cox knows a thing or two about being fearless. She’s a trailblazing transgender juggernaut who just signed on to play the Dr. Frank-N-Furter the main antagonist in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In addition to her on-going role as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black, and new role in the CBS drama Doubt, Ms. Cox is known as a red-carpet style icon.
It wasn’t always so for Ms. Cox, age 31 who speaks openly about her struggles growing up in Mobile, Alabama where she attempted suicide at the age of 11, after noticing that she had feelings for other male students. She was bullied for years for not acting “the way someone assigned male at birth was supposed to act.”
She went on to study creative writing, dance and ultimately acting which coupled with a fierce determination to succeed, poised her for the super star she is today. As a vocal and powerful LGBT advocate, Laverne has earned an Emmy nominee for Orange is the New Black and won an Emmy for her producer role in Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.
We salute Laverne Cox for being our fearless and downright fabulous Spotlight Spinster this month. She is the embodiment of our mantra that Happily Ever After Begins Now.
