Everyone who knows me, knows that I am huge fan of self-help books and self-help, in general. I am an open book when it comes to my desire to get to the root of my issues, learn what motivates me and ways that I can be a better more loving and aware person. I’m big proponent of therapy, which can be very expensive if you like me, are not covered under a corporate insurance plan, so the next best thing to help figure out our stuff – self-help books! Whining to your girlfriends or sister over a bottle of vino or two, can only get you so far. We’ve got a list of the 5 best self-help books that every woman should read to spur you into action.
You will probably recognize Dr. Brene Brown’s name from Super Soul Sunday on the OWN network. She is an expert on vulnerability and has the credentials to prove it. Daring Greatly is a phrase taken from Theodore Roosevelt’s poem Citizenship of the Republic that he gave at the Sorbonne in Paris on April 23, 1910. Dr. Brown’s book examines the power of vulnerability, courage and shame and how it shapes our lives. If you haven’t seen her Ted Talks on the subject, it is an absolute must. It’s been viewed over 21 million times and I’m sure that I’ve contributed to a least a million of those views.

We know Lisa Nichols from The Secret, the blockbuster book from 2006. She is a renowned motivational and public speaker that recently launched Motivating the Masses, one of the only publicly traded personal and business development companies. No Matter What details 9 steps to help you bounce back from life’s challenges with happiness and success. When life throws you lemons and it often does, this book will teach you how to not just make lemonade, but how to make it the best tasting lemonade ever. Louise Hay is known as one of the founders of the self-help movement. Her book You Can Heal Your life is a New Times Best Seller, and shows us how we can heal our own lives if “we are willing to do the mental work.” In the book Louise shows us how our limiting beliefs and ideas are often the cause of illness, and ways we can change our thinking. We all know Iyanla Vanzant from her show Iyanla Fix My Life on the OWN Network. In The Meantime is a New York Times bestseller from 1999, but the messages and lessons of still rings true today – that you have to truly love and care for yourself before you can do that for others.

If Louise Hay is the known as one of the founders of the self-help movement, then Gabrielle Bernstein is like her “grand-daughter” keeping the legacy alive by becoming spiritual “guru” to her young generation y followers. Her book Spirit Junkie, details her journey from a New York City publicist and girl-about-town to her spiritual awakening by providing three-part lessons about what she has learned, lived and overcome. I’ve seen Gabrielle Bernstein speak a few times and it is something to behold. You come away feeling inspired, motivated and centered. Her energy, passion and message are completely infectious.
