Yesterday, if you were in your teens or twenties in the 90’s, you might have had kind of a sad day. Phife Dawg from Tribe Called Quest died. He’d been battling diabetes for years, but he was still only 46. He left a legacy of dope rhymes and was (with the other members of Tribe, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed) representative of an era I realize I miss.
I don’t miss being a teenager, always uncomfortable in my own skin, emotionally overwrought, and pretty clueless about, well just about everything. But, there are some things I do miss though.
I miss jeans that weren’t tight, although baggy jeans are making their comeback.
And courtesy of groups like Tribe Called Quest, I miss when a girl could be a object of desire in a hoodie and an oversized coat in their video for Electric Relaxation.
Enjoy. (And if you haven’t seen the documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life about Tribe, think about adding it your queue.)
