I had brunch with a girlfriend this past weekend and she told me she was on her Christopher Columbus. What did that mean?
“Exploring new things and being open to new opportunities.” Being open had led her to all kinds of great experiences in just one day and it got me thinking, what am I “on”?
Spring is here (even if the weather where you live doesn’t know it yet) and that can inspire cleaning of closets and homes. It can also be a time to start anew.
But often the intimidation of starting down a path we’re not familiar with stops us from starting at all. What my friend said reminded me that someone out in the world is doing–already has done–the things that you’re trying to do.
They’re not doing it just the way you would, just the way you tell the story or pitch the business, or wear those shoes, but they’ve given you a map. Although in the case of Columbus, “map” would be too strong of a word…
No matter! Here at The Union, we’ve got plenty of women to help us chart a course.
For instance, I realized I’m On my Suzan Lori-Parks, my Lynn Nottage, my Lillian Hellman, my Danai Gurira (we featured her Brief, but Spectacular video in our newsletter, you are signed up for that, right?). This past weekend, I started a playwriting workshop. It’s not writing I usually do, but I’ve got an idea and I’ve got a laptop. So, here we go!
Or maybe you’re getting On your Rihanna, deciding to not care what people think of you and not worrying if it takes longer for this project to come out and is different than people expect. Soon enough, it’s going to have people talking.
Or you’re getting On your Samantha Bee. Your blazing a new trail and doing it with smarts and humor to tell people the things they need to hear.
Or you could about to get On your Serena Williams. Getting to the top of your game and being unafraid to pointedly break down any one who doubts your talent and your power as a woman.
We don’t need to “discover” a new thing. We’ve got role models to help us get to where we want already.
So, where do you want to go?
And how are you going to get On it?
