Transforming your life can be tough. I’ve been trying to do strategic life planning for the last two weeks, taking what I want and figuring out the steps to get there. But getting to be a Creative Multi-Millionaire takes time.
In the meantime, some areas of my life are a little easier to transform. About this time every year, when summer retreats and fall advances, I start assessing my starting lineup (it is football season after all). But my starting lineup has nothing to do with the calf muscles of cute, salsa dancing wide receivers. No, it’s the starting lineup in my skin routine.
Here are three steps to help with your own assessment and a few products that I’ve found to be great at transforming my skin.
First, just take a look in the mirror. Love right where your skin is now, but then start thinking about how it might be better. Is it dry? Broken out? Acne scarred? Uneven? A trip to the dermatologist might be in order, but it might also be that your skin is crying out for something you’re not giving it enough of. For years, I thought more moisture was bad for my oily skin, but then I realized a lot of my break-outs were happening because I had too little moisture. So, get in there and start thinking through exfoliating, moisturizing, deep cleansing, what do you think your skin wants?
My skin is sensitive and every product I use has to be tested before I can be sure it’ll work for me. Which is why I love me some samples. Sephora has them both online and in store as does Ulta. Just go tell those nice employees what you’re looking for (a new face wash? a new moisturizer?) and walk out with enough samples to get you a few days (or even weeks!) to try the product out. Kiehl’s is also great for samples. And if you want new samples delivered to your home every month, try out Birchbox.
Once you’ve sampled and decided you love the new product, slowly integrate it into your routine. Is it a scrub and so better to do just once a week? Or every other week? Is it a heavier moisturizer and so better to put it on at night when your skin can drink it all in and not leave your face a daytime oil slick? Around this time of year, I start switching from my Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser and start using my Fresh Soy Face Cleanser for added moisture. You want to make sure not to shock your skin with product overload and you also want to transform your routine slowly. Try to transform just one or two steps in your routine not the whole thing. Take it slow. Give your new face wash a couple of weeks to integrate, then add in the moisturizer. The face mask after that. You’ll never know how well something is working if you don’t give it time to do its work all on its own.
Ready to transform your skin? Here are a few products I love:
I have that aforementioned moisture balance problem. So, I need something moisturizing, but also lightweight. I used to love DDF’s moisturizer, but then I couldn’t find the products anywhere. Enter Kiehl’s, their Ultra Facial Oil Free Gel Cream is super moisturizing, without being heavy and I can wear it year round.
This Amore Pacific Treatment Enzyme Peel made its way into my beauty routine courtesy of a Sephora sample. It exfoliates ever so gently and my face feels all renewed after. Leave it on for a touch longer and wash it off with a gentle cleanser like the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser for maximum results.
